Vacuum cleaner-effect in fungi can hold nanoplastics at bay

Using micro-engineered soil models, researchers at Lund University in Sweden have investigated the effect of tiny polystyrene particles on bacteria and fungi. While these nanoplastics reduced both bacterial and fungal growth, the fungus actually managed to "clean up" their surroundings, thereby easing the effect of the plastics. “Plastic waste is a huge global problem. Whether carelessly discarded

Aggressive female fish put stop to mating - may lead to new species

When fish from different habitats meet, it’s not always love at first swim. New research from Lund University in Sweden in collaboration with North Carolina State University shows that aggressive females can actively repel males from the “wrong” environment. This behaviour may ultimately contribute to the emergence of new species. Understanding how species evolve is one of the most fundamental que

The reliability of scientific methods under scrutiny

How credible are research results? A new biology study shows that the same data can give different answers depending on the method of analysis used – raising questions about the stability of scientific conclusions. To strengthen credibility, researchers need to be better at accounting for their methods. Ever since the 17th century, when modern scientific research was born, methods have been refine

The featherlight long-distance fliers with parchment-thin wings

They cross oceans, glide on monsoon winds, and can appear in new places after thousands of kilometres in the air. Now a new study from Lund University shows that dragonflies are among nature’s most extreme migrants - and that their journeys may help us understand climate change. Dragonflies and damselflies are predatory insects with powerful jaws, compound eyes and spectacular colours. What is les

Researcher have developed a unique map of tree species

Abdulhakim Abdi, a researcher at Lund University, has produced new maps of the dominant tree species in southern Sweden using satellite data and machine learning. These have now been published and are available to everyone. The maps – available on the website treespecies.se – provide new insights into Sweden’s forests and can be used to track how they change over time, and how both long-term clima

Hidden highways of the sky mapped

High above us, the atmosphere is teeming with life. Birds, bats and insects share the airspace, but divide it into different lanes of traffic. New research from Lund University in Sweden reveals how the atmosphere is an ecosystem, with complex ecological processes that affect how animals move between different altitude levels. We often consider the air as simply a void – but it is in fact alive an
